Life Week #43 - 32 years
You wait for some things so long that you actually forget that you are still waiting
The first football World Cup I remember happened in 1990. I was nearly 7 years old. I have no idea how becoming a fan
happens, but I have a theory that as a child you simply pick a) the local team and b) the best team. At the time, Argentina, led by Diego Maradona attended the World Cup as a Champion so I suspect that that was a reason to make a 7-year-old child a fan of the team.
I don't remember anything from this World Cup other than the fact that I didn't watch the final match (it was too late for me and went to sleep) and when the next morning came and I heard that Argentina lost started crying, it was such an emotional moment for me.
24 years later, when Argentina played in the 2014 World Cup final, again against Germany, I was full of hope but did not expect the win. Well, it was close, but Germany was a better team. That was the last dance of the current generations for both teams so I felt that I will have to wait another 24 years for the next change.
Surprisingly, 8 years later, Argentina progressed to the World Cup final again. Playing against the remaining Champions, France, having objectively speaking 8-9 positions filled with better players made me expect nothing but the loss. Well, it was a crazy match with great Argentina in the first half, with muscular and efficient France in the second half, with big changes for both teams in the final minutes of extra time and penalties to crown the tournament.
Finally, 32 years after a 7-year-old boy cried on a Monday morning, Argentina won their World Cup final. Achievements happen, not only in football but also in life, sometimes you just need to be a bit patient and constantly move in the right direction.
