Life Week #75 - The tragedy of the age

Is living 100 years a dream or a nightmare?

It's natural for most of us to hope to live forever, or at least as long as possible. We dream of reaching the magical age of 100 years, and we celebrate amazing records of people living even longer, looking for the secrets of a long life that only few possess, but everyone else would love to have.

But, is it great to live in your eighties or nineties? You are probably already having one of the bigger popular diseases, you are slow, your muscles are slowly vanishing, your back hurts, you might have issues with sleep, most of the people you knew from your life are also sick or already dead, and young generation lives their lives. A dream or a nightmare?

I am spending a lot of time with an uncle, aged 81, that was always in great shape... until he had a stroke which caused brain damage, lots of other internal diseases and very limited control of the left side of the body. The guy that constantly felt like he was sixty suddenly became dependent on everyone around which is not working having in mind the age that comes into play.

He had a great, adventurous life and has a bunch of crazy memories, but is he happy now?

The other person, currently heading towards the nighties, without any sudden issues, but slowly, day by day, with his organism failing to function correctly. The legs are not working, the digestive system is crazy, spatial orientation is not working, memory is failing...

Is it what we all head for? Do we try to live our whole life to reach this particular moment of life? Is this the tragedy of life that leads to only two options: die younger, let's say in the seventies, feeling still good and feeling frustrated that the retirement lasted too short or suffering the pain of long life?
